【Contents】: Short Introduction to Basic Principles and Methods. Recognition of Structural Fragments by NMR. Problems.
Solutions to Problems.
【Description】: This text provides the graduate student with a systematic guide to unravelling structural information from the NMR spectra of unknown synthetic and natural compounds.
A brief introduction gives an overview of the basic principles and elementary instrumental methods of NMR. This is followed by instructional strategy and tactical advice on how to translate spectra into meaningful structural information. The book provides the student with 55 sets of spectra of graduated complexity. These are designed to challenge the student's problem-solving abilities by the introduction of new concepts with each group of problems, followed by possible solutions and full explanations. A formula index of solutions is provided at the end of the text.
This third edition, following on from the second (a reprint of the first edition with corrections), presents significant new material. Thus, actual methods of two-dimensional NMR such as some inverse techniques of heteronuclear shift correlation, as well as the detection of proton-proton connectivities and nuclear Overhauser effects are included. To demonstrate the applications of these methods, new problems have replaced those of previous editions.

【Editorial Review】: The main focus of the book, “Structure Elucidation by NMR in Organic Chemistry: A Practical Guide”, is the interpretation of example spectra. Even though the most important definitions and basic concepts of NMR spectroscopy are explained in a section on theory, the commentary in the first chapter tends toward repetition and cannot substitute for an introductory work or lecture notes. The chapter on the identification of structural characteristics through NMR, and the accompanying information on techniques such as two-dimensional spectra and NOE, will be of great value to advanced students. The chapter on spectral interpretation is practically oriented and presented in elaborate detail; it offers many useful tips that are then applied in the exercise section.
The main portion is composed of 55 practical problems that could be encountered in structure elucidation. Some of these exercises are taken from the realm of everyday synthesis, where the aim is to identify the products from specific reactions. Each problem is placed in a context, so that the data is not a dry collection of figures. The difficulty of successive problems is gradually increased, and depending upon the complexity, the data presented for interpretation includes 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectra, and later on NOE differences and two-dimensional spectra. Excellent explanations of the solutions to these problems are provided. Working through these 55 problems and explanations will put one in a position to solve even very demanding spectra in a relatively short period of time.
With this book, Eberhard Breitmaier - a renowned expert in the field of NMR spectroscopy - offers the reader a wonderful opportunity to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical experience in structure elucidation with NMR. ' ~9 C* ?' T4 h& k
